Our client is a privately owned real estate holding and development company located in Portland, Maine. The firm is looking for a skilled Financial Controller to be responsible for all aspects of accounting and financial reporting for a real estate portfolio that includes office, warehouse, manufacturing, retail, parking, and mixed-use assets.
Responsibilites:
- Responsible for all aspects of accounting and financial reporting for commercial and residential real estate portfolio
- Supervise accounting staff
- Manage financial statements, financial audits and all related internal controls
- Coordinate month-end and year-end close process
- Perform income and expense projections and actual to budget variance analysis
- Monitor payroll and corresponding payroll tax deposit requirements
- Maintain internal accounting policies and procedures
- Communicate with external tax accountants and auditors
- Manage relationship with general ledger and other software vendors
- Monitor IRS and state regulations that affect the real estate industry
- Review loan covenant agreements with financial institutions
- Monitor GAAP pronouncements as they affect audited financial statements
- Manage 401(k) plan vendor and employee relationships
- Oversee the property, liability and workers compensation insurance programs
- Oversee the health insurance program including compliance with federal and state regulations
- File real estate tax declarations including BETE program with regional municipalities
- File BETR as applicable
- Ascertain that company’s real estate municipal assessments are recorded at reasonable values
- Maintain real estate and equipment depreciation records including the cost segregation support schedules
- Monitor accounts receivable balances and delinquencies
- Review A/P journals and corresponding invoices to verify proper accounting treatment for each property
- Coordinate CAM reconciliation process with the Director of Operations
- Ascertain that rental revenues reflected in the general ledger system correspond with negotiated leases
- Coordinate tax return preparation and tax matters with external CPA firM
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of external audit and tax at a CPA firm with real estate exposure
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
- CPA preferred
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Advanced knowledge of real estate and hotel industry is a plus
- Excellent computer and problem-solving skills
- Must be proficient in MS Office, including, Word, Excel, Outlook
- Proven experience with Yardi or another reputable real estate accounting software is a plus
