Group Controller

JOB DESCRIPTION

Overview:

Our client is a private family office based on the north shore of Massachusetts. The office has launched a real estate development division and is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Group Controller to lead and manage the reporting operations for the family office as well as the real estate investment arm. These operations include farm, retail, and restaurant sales as well as real estate development. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in accounting, reporting, bookkeeping, and accounts payable, complemented by experience in real estate, project financing and tracking. The Controller will play a key role in supporting our strategic goals through precise financial reporting, analysis, and budget management. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and enhance the daily accounting operations, including general ledger, bookkeeping and accounts receivable across multiple entities.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial statements, including monthly, quarterly, and annual reports in partnership with third parties.
  • Develop and implement financial budgets aligned with the company’s strategic vision and existing business operations.
  • Partner with leadership to evaluate and execute new ventures including real estate, financing opportunities, and underwriting.
  • Collaborate with project teams to track real estate construction project spending vs. budgets, monitor expenditures, and ensure adherence to financial guidelines and contract compliance.
  • Track and manage capital calls and distributions related to private equity and venture capital commitments.
  • Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal financial regulations and tax filings. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or equivalent certification preferred).
  • Minimum of seven years’ experience in accounting, bookkeeping, and accounts payable.
  • Proven experience in real estate accounting, project financing, underwriting, and budget reporting.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP), financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Yardi) and advanced Excel skills.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. 

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working with real estate development, management, or private equity investment firms.
  • Familiarity with property management software and project financing tools.
  • Understanding of tax implications and regulatory requirements in the real estate industry.
